We are considered to be in the absolute heart of the foxhunting country of
America with nine foxhunts within 45 minutes of Warrenton. Our gently rolling
foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge mountains are in the piedmont area of
Virginia offering wide open spaces, lovely views, good deep, rich soils and
many, many scenic byways.
We think our quality of life rather than our "lifestyle" is the main draw to our
countryside. With four well-defined seasons (no place in the world has more
wonderful shades of green in the spring), the climate is very pleasant with mild
winters (most of our lovely Virginia snows last half a day and are gone two days
later), breathtaking autumns, and with the exception of a few humid weeks in the
summer, is a very happy situation for year-round living. Best of all, we have
few natural disaster situations, but we do have miles of lush pasture,
park like woodland, streams, springs,
mountain views, open space and because of our close proximity to Washington,
interesting people from all over the world. Our heritage and tradition are
preserved in our quaint historic district in Old Town Warrenton, with the lovely
shops, excellent restaurants and deli's, antique stores, beautiful old
buildings, summer concerts, community theater, wine festivals and much more.
Fauquier county was formed in 1759, named for Lieutenant Governor Francis
Fauquier and by 1775 had a population of about 14,000. In 1790 Richard Henry Lee
donated 71 acres of land for the county seat which was incorporated as the Town
of Warrenton in 1810. At the time of the Civil War, Warrenton was known as the
richest town for its size (604) in the whole South. Chief Justice Marshall, a
Fauquier County native, began his law practice in Warrenton. Indeed, after the
Civil War Warrenton was known throughout the nation for the galaxy of brilliant
lawyers who practiced at its bar and as a center for horse lovers. The Warrenton
Hunt was established in 1883 and in 1922 the first Virginia Gold Cup Race was
run as it is still run today on the first Saturday of May.
