Gold Cup Weekend Starts on Friday This Year, and the Invitation Is Addressed to Fauquier

"Fauquier County, it's time to come home to the races." That line comes from the Virginia Gold Cup Association's own tailgating page for the International Gold Cup, and it introduces two offers available only to Fauquier residents. The 89th running is Saturday, October 24, at Great Meadow in The Plains. The night before, Great Meadow hosts something new: a first-year fundraiser where the food comes from restaurants on Main Street, Broadview Avenue and South 3rd Street in Warrenton, and every dollar goes to a clinic that serves Fauquier and Rappahannock counties.

Taken together, the two changes describe a fall race meeting that is pitching itself to the county it already sits in: a Friday dinner cooked by local kitchens for a local clinic, and a Saturday parking pass priced for people with a Fauquier address.

A Friday Night Cooked Largely in Warrenton

"A Taste of Gold Cup" runs Friday, October 23, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Great Meadow, 5089 Old Tavern Road. The Gold Cup Association is the host, and its September 2 announcement says all proceeds go directly to the Fauquier Free Clinic. FauquierNow reported the same details on September 15.

The announcement describes the food lineup as a "growing list" of restaurants and caterers who volunteered to provide dishes. These are the names published so far:

  • Claire's at the Depot, the seasonal American restaurant with Southern influences inside the old train station at 65 South 3rd Street in Warrenton
  • Denim & Pearls, the modern American restaurant at 29 Main Street in Old Town Warrenton, locally owned and run by TC and Jenn Robinson
  • O'Brien's Irish Pub, at 380 Broadview Avenue in Warrenton since its 2021 founding
  • King Street Oyster Bar, which has a Middleburg location at 1 E. Washington Street
  • Pampa's Fox, an Argentinian-inspired full-service caterer that says it got its start in the Middleburg countryside
  • Marriott Ranch, a historic 4,000-acre estate that hosts events, caters and runs a bed-and-breakfast
  • Serendipity, a caterer based at 16170 Rogers Road in Culpeper that serves the Virginia Piedmont and Northern Virginia
  • Paddy O's Cafe and Bakery and The Chase at Hotel Burg round out the published list

Horse Country is sponsoring part of the bar. Commonwealth Event Company is bringing a dance floor, and local DJ Domingo Ramos of Radsounds is handling the music.

Three of the named restaurants sit within a short drive of each other in Warrenton. That makes the Friday night feel like a county event held at the steeplechase course, more than a racing event with catering. Plenty of Fauquier households have only ever seen Great Meadow on a crowded Saturday. This is a chance to see it at dusk, with fewer people and dinner from places they already know.

Where the $150 Goes

Individual tickets are $150. A reserved VIP table for six is $5,000. Tickets are limited and sold only in advance through the Fauquier Free Clinic's invitation page.

The choice of beneficiary keeps the money close to home. According to the Gold Cup Association's announcement, the clinic provides medical, dental, mental health and pediatric care to uninsured and underinsured people in Rappahannock and Fauquier counties. In 2025 it served more patients than at any point in its history, and that same year it started a pediatric primary care program for children without coverage.

The announcement includes this quote from Al Griffin, chairman of the Virginia Gold Cup Association and president of the National Steeplechase Association:

"The Fauquier Free Clinic is seeing record numbers of families and individuals seeking medical, dental and mental health assistance. The need has more than tripled this year."

In the same release, clinic executive director Rob Marino thanked "the many community partners and residents who have stepped up to help us." The release also notes that the association's board has picked community charities to support over the years. What's new in 2026 is a standalone evening, staffed by local kitchens, with nothing but the charity on the agenda.

The Saturday Math for a County Address

The Friday night brings the community to Great Meadow. The Saturday offers bring down the cost of getting there. The Gold Cup's tailgating page lists two limited-time deals for Fauquier residents, claimed by phone at 540-347-2612. This is how they compare with standard pricing:

Item Standard price Fauquier-only offer
Row 4 tailgate for four $432 $332
General parking pass $108 $25 with admission tickets
Members Hill admission $81 No county discount listed

The parking discount is the bigger one in proportion. The ticket page says admission passes don't include parking, so on standard pricing a car costs more than an $81 Members Hill admission. Under the county offer, parking drops to less than a third of that admission price. The association hasn't said publicly why it created the county-only pricing beyond its "come home" message, and the offers are described as limited-time.

A few logistics from the parking and transport page: North Rail parking enters through Gate 9 and South Rail through Gate 8. If someone is dropping you off, you'll need a $10.80 rideshare pass to use North Gate 5.

What the Card Looks Like on October 24

Gates open at 10 a.m. The first of seven races goes off at noon, and gates close at 4:45 p.m. According to the National Steeplechase Association's fall 2026 condition book, these are the two races that anchor the afternoon:

  1. 2:00 p.m. The Grade 2 William H. Allison Stakes, race four, with a $100,000 purse
  2. 2:40 p.m. The 89th International Gold Cup, race five, a 3½-mile timber stakes with a $50,000 purse

The feature race has the smaller purse of the two, and that's a fair sign of what the International Gold Cup is. Its draw is tradition and distance over timber, while the Allison carries twice the prize money. Winners that are Virginia-bred, Virginia-sired or Virginia-certified can qualify for a 25% bonus, capped at $10,000 and paid by the Virginia Thoroughbred Association. The other races are the Virginia Equine Alliance Maiden Hurdle, the Great Meadow Steeplethon, the Broadview Allowance Hurdle, the Zeke Ferguson Memorial Ratings Handicap Hurdle and the Springs Road Maiden Claiming Hurdle.

Nominations close Monday, October 12, and entries close Monday, October 19. Last fall's winner was Keys Discount, trained by Jack Fisher, according to Fauquier Times coverage ahead of the spring meet. That preview doesn't say whether he'll run again in October.

The infield traditions are back too. The tailgate contest returns, with entries taken by email through the association's publicist, and the hat contest is awarding prizes in five categories. One of them is Best Child for entrants under 18, and another is Best Men's Showing. The 2026 schedule puts the opening ceremony and national anthem at 11:30 a.m., before the first race.

The Saturday Before Is Free, or Close to It

The week before Gold Cup has its own local pair of events, and both cost little or nothing.

On October 17 and 18, Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane holds its Fall Foliage Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the park's historic area at 11012 Edmonds Lane. Virginia State Parks lists wagon rides, scenic hikes, live music and fall treats. Standard park admission applies, with no separate event fee and no registration. The park hasn't published the names of its vendors or performers.

On the same Saturday, Kinloch Farm at 5313 Hopewell Road in The Plains hosts its free "Reach the Roots" farm tour from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It includes hayrides, farm animals, conservation demonstrations, local food and music by the Ribbon Rail Ramblers. Kinloch is a few miles down the road from Great Meadow, so the two weekends land on the same stretch of Fauquier countryside seven days apart.

Laid out on a calendar, the run looks like this:

  • Saturday, Oct. 17: Kinloch Farm tour and day one of the Sky Meadows festival
  • Sunday, Oct. 18: Day two at Sky Meadows
  • Monday, Oct. 19: Gold Cup entries close
  • Friday, Oct. 23: A Taste of Gold Cup, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 24: The 89th International Gold Cup, gates at 10 a.m.

Event details can change. Before you go, check the Gold Cup site, the Sky Meadows event listing and the Fauquier Free Clinic's ticket page for updates.
